Palestinian green card holder arrested at citizenship interview, later ordered deported after release
Mohsen Mahdawi, a lawful permanent resident and Columbia University graduate student who has lived in the U.S. since 2014, was arrested by federal agents on April 14, 2025, immediately after a naturalization interview at a USCIS office in Vermont. The Trump administration alleged his pro-Palestinian activism threatened U.S. foreign policy and sought his deportation. Federal Judge Crawford ordered his release on bail on April 30, 2025, finding the arrest was retaliation for protected speech in violation of his First Amendment and due process rights. Immigration Judge Nina Froes later terminated the deportation case on February 17, 2026, citing the government's failure to authenticate supporting documents, but the administration revived proceedings, and Immigration Judge Angela Munson ordered him deported on June 3, 2026, based on the foreign policy bar. The ACLU, representing Mahdawi, filed an appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit on June 10, 2026.
