Elderly Portland couple knocked down by federal agents during ICE facility protest
Laurie Eckman, 84, and her husband Richard Eckman, 84, a Vietnam War veteran who uses a walker, were knocked to the ground by federal agents during a protest outside an ICE facility in South Portland on October 5, 2025. The couple lives nearby and walks past the building daily; they joined the demonstration spontaneously after seeing it from their kitchen window. Laurie Eckman said officers charged at them with no warning and no apparent reason, and she sustained a concussion from the assault. Eyewitnesses confirmed the couple's account to The Oregonian/OregonLive.
