Dallas DACA recipient detained after DACA revoked over pro-Palestine social media posts
Yaa'kub Ira Vijandre, a 38-year-old Filipino-born DACA recipient, freelance journalist, and community activist who had lived in the Dallas-Arlington area for over 20 years, was detained by ICE at his Arlington apartment on October 7, 2025. The government had moved to terminate his DACA status, citing social media posts in which he criticized the Gaza war, ICE detention conditions, and human rights abuses. He has not been charged with any crimes. His attorneys filed a habeas corpus petition arguing his detention violates his First and Fifth Amendment rights, asserting his speech was protected political expression rather than support for terrorism. He was initially held at Bluebonnet Detention Center before being transferred to Folkston Detention Center in Georgia. On March 24, 2026, community members and supporters appeared before the Arlington City Council to request a resolution calling for his release, citing constitutional concerns and detention conditions.
