Honduran teen with legal status detained after traffic stop, denied deferred action
Elder Chavez, an 18-year-old from Honduras who was granted Special Immigrant Juvenile Status in September 2024, was detained by ICE in December 2024 after Alabama police pulled him over for speeding and driving without a license. He presented documentation of his legal status, but officers contacted ICE and took him into custody anyway. Chavez came to the U.S. in 2022 at age 14 to live with his older sister Maryuri after being abandoned by his parents in Honduras, where he now has no family. A high school student who excelled in welding and carpentry classes, he was transported to Winn Correctional Center in Louisiana, missing prom, the birth of his nephew, and months of school. His English teacher Carmen Bahena, sister Maryuri, and local pastors Andy Yarnell and Beth Johnson have described him as kind, hardworking, bright, and gentle. His application for deferred action was later denied, and advocates say he faces high risk of deportation.
