Activist shot in foot by off-duty ICE facility employee during protest, returns to protest after recovery
Emma Landis, a 22-year-old activist and artist, was shot in the right foot while protesting outside the GEO Group-operated Aurora ICE Processing Center in Colorado. Police say Brandon Booth, a 42-year-old off-duty GEO Group employee, became involved in a verbal confrontation with protesters, fired his personal firearm at Landis and another woman, then fled the scene. Landis had to call 911 herself and was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, requiring six to eight weeks of bed rest that has kept her from working and pursuing her hobbies. Friends described her as 'an activist, an artist, a human, a sister, a daughter, a granddaughter and a friend.' Despite her injury, Landis returned to protest at the facility and said she will continue advocating for the closure of immigration detention facilities in Colorado. Booth was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, attempted first-degree assault, felony menacing, and unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon, with bond set at $500,000.
