Honduran mother self-deports with US citizen daughter, leaving two older daughters in Boston
Margarita Melgar, a mother from Honduras who had lived in the U.S. for 12 years after fleeing extreme violence, was told by immigration agents she could either face indefinite detention or self-deport. She chose to leave, departing for Honduras on June 28, 2026, with her 10-year-old daughter Katherin, a U.S. citizen who had never been to Honduras. Her two older daughters, 20-year-old Damary and 17-year-old Tania, remained behind in Boston. Damary, a college student at Simmons College who works full-time as a restaurant server, switched her studies from pre-med to business and finance due to financial pressures, and now must support her mother and sister from abroad while also finding stable housing after being unable to afford the family's Brighton apartment alone. The family said their goodbyes at Logan Airport. Damary said the family had fully complied with immigration check-ins and procedures, and that she must remain strong for her family while sending money to Honduras.
