Utah college student detained by ICE during traffic stop on way to new job
Lisandro Pantaleon Pacheco, a 22-year-old University of Utah student and Park City High School graduate, was detained by ICE agents after being pulled over on S.R. 224 while driving to his first day at a new job near Kimball Junction, Utah. Brought to the U.S. from Mexico by his mother at age one, Pacheco had no criminal history aside from the traffic citation that led to his stop and had previously applied for DACA before the program closed. He was pursuing a bachelor's degree in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism and was expected to graduate around the time of his detention. Authorities transported him to a facility in West Valley City before transferring him to a county jail in Evanston, Wyoming, where his attorney is considering bond or a habeas corpus filing and has questioned whether profiling played a role in the stop. His girlfriend, Britney Xiques, said the couple had recently marked their second anniversary and that he had bought an engagement ring before his arrest; more than 70 supporters gathered in support of his family. Up to eight other individuals were reportedly detained in the same ICE operation.
