Clayton Herman, a 54-year-old Canadian citizen from Winnipeg who had lived for two decades in Ojai, California, was detained by ICE in October 2025 after agents accused him of violating supervision conditions based on readings from a monitoring device he called 'glitchy.' He had entered the U.S. legally in 2002, overstayed his visa, and had been checking in regularly with ICE since 2022. During his detention at the Adelanto ICE Processing Centre, run by the GEO Group in California's Mojave Desert, Herman reported mold, inadequate medical care, poor food quality, and irregular schedules; four detainees died at the facility during his time there. A federal magistrate judge ruled in June 2026 that his detention violated his rights and ordered his release, but he was re-arrested on July 21 during a routine check-in after missing a July 10 appeal deadline, which he said was due to delayed priority mail. He refused to sign expedited deportation papers, citing concern over leaving his cats and the life he had built in the Ojai Valley, and was ultimately deported to Canada on August 26, 2026.
