Jean Wilson Brutus, a 41-year-old Haitian man, died at Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey after suffering a medical emergency less than a day after being detained. An ambulance transporting him to University Hospital was delayed by 5 minutes as officials prioritized allowing a van of new detainees into the facility. Brutus is the 23rd person to die in ICE custody during what has been recorded as the deadliest year for ICE detainees.
