Son released after ICE traffic stop, mother still detained in Alabama

Sep 24, 2026Sevierville, TN

Kristopher Rivas-Betanco, a Sevier County High School senior and soccer team captain from Honduras who has lived in Tennessee since 2019, was detained by ICE on September 17 alongside his mother, Gladys Betanco-Martinez, after local police stopped their vehicle while driving home from her job, with his two younger sisters also in the car. The two spent a night together in the Knoxville jail before being separated and sent to different facilities; ICE later said it determined Kristopher was still a minor, not 18 as prior records indicated, and released him on September 22, returning him to Tennessee into a guardian's care. He was back with family by September 23 but had not yet returned to school, while his mother remained held at a detention facility in Alabama. Friends and coaches described him as a polite, well-liked young man who hopes to play college soccer and become an engineer; the family's asylum case had been dismissed by a judge in 2024. Kristopher said returning home without his mother and sisters has been difficult, and family and friends started a GoFundMe and online petition to fund an immigration attorney and push for his mother's release.

While detained, he led a Bible study group and counseled a fellow detainee who was contemplating suicide. His wife and their two U.S.-born children, Isaac and Sofia, remain in York, where he pastored a congregation, and his Motion to Reopen remains pending.

Sep 22, 2026Dartmouth, MAPortugal

João Ferreira, a Portuguese legal permanent resident, was detained by ICE early Tuesday in Dartmouth alongside a Brazilian man while riding in a landscaping truck on his way to a job in New Bedford. Court records reviewed by The New Bedford Light show Ferreira had a 1992 case in Fall River District Court that was continued without a finding and later closed, a disposition generally resulting from completed probation, and a 2009 conviction for which he received probation. In 2019, he was stopped by Customs and Border Protection at Logan Airport and issued a notice to appear for removal proceedings, and he had filed a motion for a new trial on the earlier charges that court records show remained unresolved. He was identified as the only detainee in the outlet's review of the South Coast ICE operation who had faced felony charges in Massachusetts courts.

Sep 21, 2026New Bedford, MAGuatemala

Miguel Ixcuna-Ixcuna, a 30-year-old Guatemalan immigrant who had lived in the New Bedford, Massachusetts area for about 12 years and worked as a fruit and vegetable packer in Plymouth, was pulled from his car by ICE agents while driving home with his partner, Antonia Lucas, and their two daughters, ages 3 and 9. Agents blocked the vehicle front and back, took his identification, and removed him from the driver's seat with little explanation as his young daughters watched, frightened. He had no criminal record and is now held at the Burlington ICE Processing Center; his partner said he is worried about his daughters and family. His arrest came amid a multi-day ICE operation that detained at least eight people in the area, including fish house and seafood processing workers Israel Sam Cajuil, Arnaldo Lux, Kenshino Pierre and Oscar Abel Gutierrez; advocates said several had valid work authorization, and Mayor Jon Mitchell said most had no records beyond minor motor-vehicle violations. During the operation, agents tased a man who fled a stop, smashed a truck window to remove another person, and arrested a father near an elementary school. Attorneys have filed habeas corpus petitions in federal court in Boston, including one seeking to prevent Ixcuna's transfer out of state, while local restaurant owners reported sales fell roughly 50% following the sweep.

Aleks Latsabidze, 46, a native and citizen of the country of Georgia with a pending asylum case and a prior bid for employment-based permanent residence, worked as a commercial truck driver based out of New York. On August 15, 2026, he was involved in a collision between two semi-trucks on Interstate 80 near North Platte, Nebraska, after a truck merged onto the highway below the minimum speed limit and was struck from behind; the other driver, Jose Espinosa Salazar, 40, of Florida, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators initially told Latsabidze they would not charge him and planned to release him, but after learning he was not a U.S. citizen, they contacted ICE, which requested he be held; he was booked into the Lincoln County Jail/Detention Center on an immigration hold the day after the crash. On August 24, Nebraska State Patrol announced he had also been arrested on suspicion of motor vehicle homicide following further investigation. His wife, Yesenia Esquivel Santiago, a lifelong Austin resident who met Lucas at Cristo Rey Catholic Church in 2016, said agents gave no explanation for his detention; the couple married in 2021, bought a home together, and had begun paperwork years ago to secure Lucas's legal status, which remains unresolved. Yesenia is now caring alone for their 14-month-old son, Yadiel, and preparing to give birth to their second child, after previously losing a first pregnancy at 19 weeks. Lucas remains held at a detention facility in Taylor, Texas, as Yesenia seeks legal help, income and child care while advocating publicly for his release.

Four people, including two Turkish nationals, arrested in Moab ICE operation

Sep 21, 2026Moab, UT

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested four people during a targeted enforcement operation in the Moab, Utah area. ICE said two were Mexican nationals with final removal orders or prior voluntary departures who had re-entered the country, while the other two were Turkish nationals described as being in the country without authorization, with no further details provided on their cases. Grand County Sheriff Jamison Wiggins said the operation was not relayed to his office in advance and called it an "unprecedented lack of information and communication," adding that administrative warrants were being served and that his office and Moab Police would not assist; ICE countered that it had notified local officials of the plans the prior Saturday and said it aims to be a good partner with local law enforcement. The Moab Valley Multicultural Center activated its emergency protocol, offering free rides and information to residents concerned about the ICE presence, and said agents were in the area from about 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., though it could not independently verify how many people were taken.

Mayor Renee Baskerville and Deputy Mayor Susan Shin Andersen said ICE had not notified local police of the operation.
