Jan 24, 2026Los Angeles, CAColombia

Anthony Paredes, an 18-year-old deaf high school senior at Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts in Los Angeles, was chased and tackled to the ground by Department of Homeland Security immigration officers on January 24, 2026, during a peaceful protest outside a federal building in downtown Los Angeles. Multiple bystanders shouted that Paredes was deaf and could not hear the officers' verbal commands, but he was taken into custody without a sign language interpreter provided. While in custody, Paredes' requests to use a restroom were denied. His mother, Guadalupe Diaz, expressed concern about the lack of interpreter access during the encounter. Educators and organizers plan to file a claim and lawsuit against the government and seek to have charges dropped, with a court date scheduled for April 1.

Legal observer arrested and injured by ICE agents during Minnesota enforcement surge

Jan 24, 2026Minneapolis, MN

Georgia Savageford, a Minneapolis woman, was arrested by federal immigration officers on January 24, 2026, after being pushed to the ground by an agent. She was then tackled and dragged face-down by three agents, who knelt on her back, twisted her arms and legs, and handcuffed her so tightly she suffered temporary nerve damage and lost feeling in her hands. Savageford was a legal observer monitoring ICE enforcement activities when the incident occurred. She was placed in an ICE holding facility where she was held for 12 hours in a cold cell without adequate access to food, water, or bathroom facilities, then released without being charged. Civil rights attorneys have filed complaints on her behalf as part of an effort to pursue class-action lawsuits over alleged excessive force.

West Chicago teens document ICE enforcement in Minneapolis after agent-involved deaths

Jan 24, 2026Minneapolis, MN

Brothers Ben Luhmann, 17, and Sam Luhmann, 16, of West Chicago have been traveling to Minneapolis to document U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol operations, uploading footage to a public Google Drive folder for anyone to use. They arrived the day after federal agents fatally shot Renee Macklin Good on Jan. 7, and on Jan. 24 witnessed the aftermath of VA nurse Alex Pretti's shooting death by Border Patrol agents, which occurred as he was recording them and attempting to help a woman who had been shoved to the ground. Their footage has captured Border Patrol Cmdr. Gregory Bovino throwing a tear gas canister into a crowd, agents slipping on ice, and an agent pepper spraying a man at close range while others held him to the ground. The brothers say enforcement actions in Minneapolis have been far more intense than what they previously documented in Chicago.

South Portland Citizen Observer Sues Two Named ICE Agents Who Threatened Him in January

Jan 24, 2026South Portland, ME

On January 22, 2026, ICE agents fired paintball-like projectiles at vehicles driven by citizen observers monitoring immigration enforcement in a Home Depot parking lot in South Portland, Maine, part of a broader surge in ICE operations in the state that week. Robert Peck, one of the observers, filed a notice of claim under the Federal Tort Claims Act on February 1, 2026 seeking $7.5 million after deportation officers Nicholas Lapointe and Christopher Semler threatened to arrest him for following and filming them on Route 1. In June 2026 Peck filed a civil complaint under Maine's civil rights act, and he has since formally sued the two agents for violating his First and Fourth Amendment rights, with Lapointe and Semler required to respond by October 16. His attorney, David Webbert, says it is the first time a Maine legal observer has sued ICE officers under the state's civil rights law.

His family said he was distressed by immigration enforcement actions and had participated in protests.

Mexican immigrant suffers eight skull fractures during ICE arrest in St. Paul; FBI investigating

Jan 23, 2026St. Paul, MNMexico

Alberto Castañeda Mondragón, a 31-year-old roofer from Veracruz, Mexico, who founded a construction company in St. Paul and supports a 10-year-old daughter in Mexico, suffered at least eight skull fractures and brain hemorrhages after his Jan. 8 arrest near a St. Paul shopping center. ICE initially claimed he ran headfirst into a brick wall while handcuffed, but nurses and an outside physician said his injuries were inconsistent with that account, and one ICE officer reportedly told hospital staff he "got his (expletive) rocked." His lawyers said he was racially profiled as "a brown-skinned, Latino Spanish speaker" and that his arrest warrant was signed by an ICE officer rather than a judge; a federal judge later ordered his release from custody. His brother said he has significant memory loss, cannot work for the foreseeable future, and has been taken in by coworkers since he has no family in Minnesota.

DHS said Vermie was arrested for allegedly assaulting a law enforcement officer. Four attorneys told ABC News they were denied access to clients held at the same facility, with multiple attorneys reporting similar complaints from others arrested in recent Minneapolis ICE operations and alleging violations of Fifth and Sixth Amendment due process and right-to-counsel protections.

Agents entered the family's driveway without a warrant, broke the vehicle window while the child was inside, and transported both father and daughter to a federal facility. Despite a court order issued at 8:11 p.m. on January 23 requiring the child's immediate release, ICE placed them on a commercial flight to Texas by 8:30 p.m. The child was returned to her mother in Minnesota on January 24, but her father remains in custody. Jan 23, 2026Portland, MEColombia

Juan Sebastián Carvajal-Muñoz, a Colombian civil engineer with a master's degree from the University of Maine and a valid H-1B work visa, was violently detained by ICE agents while driving to work in Portland, Maine. Masked agents in unmarked vehicles surrounded his car, smashed his driver's side window with a crowbar, pointed a Taser at him, and dragged him out despite his attempts to show proof of lawful status, leaving his car running in the street. He was placed in full-body shackles and transported across state lines to an ICE facility in Massachusetts, where he was held for hours in a windowless cell before being released without charges roughly 105 miles from his home. Carvajal-Muñoz, who has no criminal record despite the operation reportedly targeting immigrants with criminal histories, said he continues to fear being detained again. ICE detainee seized after missed epilepsy medication, pepper-sprayed upon return from hospital

Jan 22, 2026Miami, IN

Andranik Grigoryan, a New York resident detained at Miami Correctional Facility in Indiana, suffered a severe seizure on January 22—his first in nearly a year—after correctional medical staff failed to provide his prescribed anti-seizure medication (Keppra), which he had relied on for years to control epilepsy. He hit his head during the seizure and was left lying in a pool of blood before being taken to a local hospital for treatment. Upon returning to the facility the same day, officers pepper-sprayed him through a cell port while he was still recovering from the seizure and had difficulty standing, causing intense burning and respiratory distress, then moved him to another cell without letting him wash off the spray. The ACLU of Indiana filed lawsuits on his behalf on July 27 against Centurion Health of Indiana and unidentified correctional officers, alleging 14th Amendment violations; the Indiana Department of Correction said it had no statement, and Centurion did not respond to a request for comment.

ICE Enters Homes Without Warrants, Violates Constitutional Protections

Jan 21, 2026Austin, TX
