The farm, which had never been audited in its history, was left with 16 employees after the terminations.

Federal judge rules ICE's warrantless arrests at Liberty restaurant unlawful, extends settlement terms

Oct 10, 2025Liberty, Missouri

On February 7, 2025, ICE officers arrested 12 employees at El Potro Mexican Restaurant in Liberty, Missouri while searching for a registered sex offender. A federal judge ruled that 11 of the arrests were unlawful, finding that ICE lacked probable cause to justify warrantless arrests and violated a legal settlement agreement requiring probable cause that a person is likely to escape before making such arrests in the Midwest region. The judge found that the restaurant owner was not informed that employees had the option to refuse speaking with agents. The National Immigrant Justice Center brought the case challenging the raids. The federal judge extended the terms of the settlement agreement through February 2026.

Oct 3, 2025Chicago, IL

On October 3, 2025, federal agents conducting an immigration enforcement operation in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood deployed tear gas near Funston Elementary School, exposing students, including first-graders, and traumatizing hundreds of children and families. Teachers, including Liza Oliva-Perez, were tear-gassed while protecting students, and parents like Molly Kucich abandoned errands to reach their children. Children have since shown signs of anxiety, nightmares, and fear of family separation, with some asking teachers and dolls whether ICE will come for them. The operation, part of a broader initiative dubbed 'Operation Midway Blitz,' also included a separate incident at 51st and Damen where agents threw a smoke bomb and detained a person, alongside reports of residential raids, helicopter operations, and use of pepper munitions against protesters.
