Somali men told they'd be deported home instead shipped to Guantanamo Bay

Aug 28, 2025Somalia

ICE told Somali asylum seekers they were being deported to Somalia, but instead flew them to the U.S. military base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, where several remain detained. Sakariye Abdi Mohamed, a truck driver with no criminal record, was stopped by an Alabama trooper and held nearly a year in Louisiana before being flown to Guantánamo; a colleague described him as a hardworking 'rookie truck driver' who did everything right. Adam Abdullah, a 31-year-old mechanic with a pending asylum case and work permit, was stopped in Minnesota during 'Operation Metro Surge' and moved through facilities in three states over nine months before arriving at Guantánamo, where he has limited attorney access and brief, possibly monitored phone calls. Fellow detainees Abdullahi Adam Mohamed, a mechanic and small business owner, and Hassan Abdi Abtidoon, a former rideshare driver turned back while seeking asylum in Canada, were also transferred there. Detainees describe being shackled at all times, held in frigid conditions with cameras in bathrooms, and have held hunger strikes; family members call the ordeal 'shocking and frightening.' DHS has claimed the group included 'some of the worst of the worst' with criminal histories, though this reflects the agency's allegation rather than confirmed fact.

Mother and Daughter Detained by Deputies, ICE After Hospital Treatment, Later Self-Deport

Aug 20, 2025Osceola County, FLEcuador

Grace Calero Cabanilla, 39, and her 19-year-old daughter Giulianna Carriel Calero were taken into custody at HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital after being treated for injuries from an Aug. 20 two-vehicle crash in Poinciana. The Polk County Sheriff's Office says deputies were at the hospital investigating the crash and determined Calero Cabanilla, then her daughter, had overstayed their authorized stays; deputies contacted ICE, which confirmed civil immigration warrants and lodged detainers, and the women were taken to Polk County Jail after discharge. ICE says Calero Cabanilla entered the U.S. legally in March 2023 and Carriel Calero in February 2025, both overstaying their authorized periods; arrest affidavits note neither woman has a criminal history. A relative's GoFundMe states Calero Cabanilla has a pending asylum case and valid work permit and Carriel Calero holds a visa valid until 2030. Cellphone video showed the women, one still attached to an IV, being separated and detained by deputies; the women elected to voluntarily depart and arrived in Quito, Ecuador, while community groups protested outside the hospital.

Border Patrol Agents Ambush Home Depot in LA Despite Court Order

Aug 6, 2025Los Angeles, CA

US Border Patrol agents conducted a raid outside a Home Depot in Los Angeles's Westlake neighborhood using an unmarked yellow Penske rental truck, with masked officers jumping out and arresting 16 people from Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The operation, called 'Operation Trojan Horse,' occurred despite a federal court order prohibiting indiscriminate raids in the region due to evidence of racial profiling and targeting based on appearance, language, and location. Penske said it was not informed its truck would be used in the operation and did not authorize it, citing a policy against transporting people in vehicle cargo areas. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass's office said it is gathering information and considering legal options, calling the use of rental trucks in raids 'un-American.'

When his car pulled up, agents forced it open and handcuffed him; about 45 minutes to an hour later they realized he was not the person they sought but kept him detained anyway, later citing a warrant that did not exist at the time of arrest. Orozco, whose wife Yolanda has spoken publicly about the case, remains in ICE custody roughly six months after his arrest, and his attorneys at the National Immigrant Justice Center are seeking his release while challenging the legality of warrantless ICE arrests more broadly.

She was transported to a detention facility in Conroe, Texas, and Correa was not notified of her whereabouts for three days, learning of her location only when she called him from detention. Despite having a work permit and clean check-in record with immigration officials, and despite her husband's military service and USCIS having approved his sponsorship petition for her in 2023, Guardado was detained for nearly three months. The couple's application for military parole in place was denied due to her prior expedited deportation order, and on May 30—her 28th birthday—she was deported to Honduras, separated from her 1-year-old son and active-duty military husband.

February 2025New Orleans, LA

She was detained when she arrived at her check-in and held at a Louisiana ICE jail, where she says she was denied medical care, placed in solitary confinement, and subjected to verbal and transphobic harassment. She had received the Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center annual human rights award in 2024 and was in the process of obtaining a visa for trafficking survivors. She was later deported to Mexico, a country she had never lived in before, and is now working to rebuild her life there while recovering from infections she says went untreated during detention.
