Oct 16, 2025Alabama
Disappearance/DetentionU.S. Citizen

Lonardo Garcia Venegas, 25, was working at a construction site in coastal Alabama when he saw masked immigration agents hop a fence and run by a “No trespassing” sign. Garcia Venegas recalled them moving toward the Latino workers. He started filming after his undocumented brother asked agents for a warrant. The agents yanked his brother to the ground, shoving his face into wet concrete. Garcia Venegas kept filming until officers grabbed him too and knocked his phone to the ground. They repeatedly tried to take him to the ground while he yelled, “I’m a citizen!” Officers pulled out his REAL ID, which Alabama only issues to those legally in the U.S. But agents dismissed it as fake. Officers held Garcia Venegas handcuffed for more than an hour. His brother was later deported. Garcia Venegas was so shaken that he took two weeks off of work. Soon after he returned, he was working alone inside a nearly built house listening to music on his headphones when he sensed someone watching him. A masked immigration agent was standing in the bedroom doorway. Again, they dismissed his REAL ID and held him to check his citizenship. Garcia Venegas said agents also held two other workers who had legal status. (Reporting by immigration reporter Nicole Foy)

Ali Faqirzada, 31, a women's and human rights champion and U.S. ally fled Afghanistan in 2021 and has been waiting for his asylum case to be decided for years. On October 14, ICE detained Ali just after he had been found to have a viable claim for asylum. Ali fled Afghanistan after he and his family received repeated death threats from Taliban members due to their work to empower Afghan women, their employment with the U.S.-aligned Afghan government, and their faith. Every member of Ali's family, including his parents and siblings, have been granted asylum. Ali was the last one waiting for a decision on his immigration case. His asylum application has been pending since 2022. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently terminated the application and instead placed Ali in expedited removal proceedings. Ali passed an initial screening, meaning the Asylum Officer found he had a high likelihood of being granted asylum, yet ICE still arrested and jailed him. ICE has the authority to immediately release Ali to continue his immigration case while living at home with his family in New York.

Man held in hospital bed month without charges

Oct 9, 2025Los Angeles California
U.S. Citizen

For more than a month, federal immigration officials surveilled Bayron Rovidio Marin in a hospital bed at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he lay recuperating from serious injuries to his leg after an encounter with agents at a Carson car wash they raided. He was never charged and his lawyers say he was shackled to his bed for several days and couldn’t speak privately with doctors or legal counsel.Over the weekend, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order requiring immigration officials to remove the guards watching over Bayron Rovidio Marin, take off the handcuffs and leave him unrestrained.Despite Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s insistence on holding the man, the federal judge said the government failed to provide any proof that he had “violated any law or regulation” or show that he was a “flight risk.”To date, ICE has not placed Rovidio Marin in removal proceedings, charged him with violating immigration law, set bond, issued a Notice to Appear or otherwise processed him, according to the order. The government told the court that they would determine the immigration status of Rovidio Marin once he was released from the hospital. His attorneys argued being indefinitely held without any charges is a clear constitutional violation.Read more at the link in bio.
