Asylum seeker transferred out of state despite court order, judge orders release

Jun 24, 2026Lewiston, ME

Eduardo Jose Alves, an Angolan asylum seeker living in Lewiston, Maine, who entered the U.S. on a valid tourist visa and filed an affirmative asylum application, was detained by ICE agents at his home on June 20, 2026. That same day, a court issued an emergency order staying his transfer out of Maine for 72 hours, but ICE moved him to Plymouth County Correctional Center in Massachusetts within two hours of the order. Attorneys raised questions about whether agents had a valid warrant and whether they improperly pressured his 15-year-old daughter to allow entry into the home. U.S. District Judge Stacey Neumann later found the detention violated the existing court order and that his out-of-state transfer impaired his right to counsel ahead of an imminent bond hearing, and ordered his immediate release from ICE custody. The dispute became a flashpoint between immigration authorities and attorneys challenging the administration's enforcement tactics.

Three detained in South Burlington ICE raid as state police assist despite objections

Jun 22, 2026South Burlington, VT

On March 11, 2026, ICE agents conducted an enforcement operation at a Dorset Street residence in South Burlington, Vermont, targeting one person on a warrant. Over 100 community members gathered to block the operation. ICE initially considered abandoning the effort but requested assistance from Vermont State Police, South Burlington Police, and Burlington Police. State and local officers deployed riot equipment, physically confronted community members, and cleared a path for ICE agents to enter the home. Three residents were detained, none of whom were named on the warrant: Cristian Jerez and sisters Johana and Camila Patin. Community members reported being pepper sprayed, shot with pepperballs, choked, and tackled. Within a week, a federal judge ordered all three released, finding the arrests unconstitutional. Internal police reviews concluded there were no excessive force violations by state or local officers, though civil rights advocates and political leaders condemned the operation and questioned police collaboration with ICE in violation of Vermont's Fair and Impartial Policing Policy.

On June 21, 2026, ICE agents detained him at his residence in Nashville, Tennessee, following a 911 call that led to confusion, after he had voluntarily gone to an ICE office to try to resolve his immigration status; he was then transferred to the Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana, where he shares space with about 120 other men awaiting deportation. Mata, who says he held a U Visa and was in the process of applying for legal permanent residency, reported losing nearly 15 kilos over three months due to poor food, broken air conditioning, and unsanitary bathroom conditions, and said he has been unable to get his prescribed medication for injuries from a prior car accident that left him with metal plates in his hip, leg and foot. He agreed to waive his appeal and accept deportation to Costa Rica, but still has no departure date, saying immigration authorities reportedly lost his case documents while his lawyer continues trying to resolve his situation.
