Aug 25, 2026Fort Myers, FL

Marili Tomas was livestreaming on Facebook when ICE agents and Florida Highway Patrol officers smashed her car window and pulled her from the vehicle in Fort Myers, Florida. The live video cut off abruptly during the incident and remained her last Facebook post as of the following day. She was taken to Lee County Jail and charged with two counts of resisting an officer; she was not placed in ICE custody, and her bond was set at $3,000. ICE agents in Florida operate with local and state law enforcement under the 287(g) program, which has reportedly been used to target people documenting ICE activity.

Native American protester hospitalized after being tased and tackled outside ICE office

Aug 25, 2026Sacramento, CA

Sisi Rose, 33, a member of the Cheyenne River and Sisseton-Wahpeton tribes, was tased and tackled to the pavement by police while protesting outside the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations office in Sacramento, California. An officer allegedly shot pepper spray into her mouth and then arrested her for assault after she spit it out, while officers knelt on her neck with their body weight. She was hospitalized after the taser probe embedded into the bone of her wrist, with doctors saying it may not be safely removed for a week, and she continued to experience burning and respiratory distress from the pepper spray. Rose said she has been protesting for months against what she calls ICE's unlawful detentions of Native Americans and U.S. citizens, saying, "My kids could be snatched up off the streets, and we're from here, and that scares me."

He was released minutes later after a status check cleared him. A second man who appeared Latino was seized shortly afterward, and an older man filming the encounter was ordered to move away from the scene.

Nigerian man beaten and tased in mistaken-identity ICE arrest in Bushwick

Aug 21, 2026Brooklyn, NYNigeria

Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian immigrant, was arrested by ICE agents in Bushwick, Brooklyn, in early May after agents mistook him for a Mauritanian man they had an administrative warrant to arrest, describing him as having 'the same build and likeness.' Agents ran the New Jersey plates on the car he was driving and found he had overstayed a tourist visa, then trailed him for several blocks before pulling him over; during the arrest he was beaten and appeared to have been tased. He was taken to Wyckoff Hospital, where a counterprotest and standoff with police and ICE agents formed outside. DHS initially claimed Okeke had prior arrests for assault and drug possession, though ICE's own arrest record stated he had no known criminal history.

Venezuelan man beaten, detained by ICE agents while driving to work in Gainesville

Aug 21, 2026Gainesville, GAVenezuela

Mikel Junior Sanchez Ortiz, a 24-year-old Venezuelan man, was beaten and taken into custody early on August 19 while driving to work with his girlfriend, Haklin Olivares, 22, on Dawsonville Highway in Gainesville, Georgia. Olivares said several men in a truck stopped them, demanded their licenses, forced open the car doors, and struck Sanchez Ortiz until he bled before pulling him out; she was released after the men said her immigration status was in order but his was not. Sanchez Ortiz later told her by phone that his nose and mouth were injured internally, with a cut on his forehead and marks on his neck from being grabbed. Olivares said the men confiscated her phone and demanded she delete photos of the incident, and said she is uncertain whether they were ICE agents or bounty hunters. The couple has a pending asylum case with a court date scheduled for 2027, hold valid work permits and driver's licenses, and say they have no criminal record. Sanchez Ortiz is being held at Stewart Detention Center in southwest Georgia, and Olivares started a GoFundMe seeking $1,600 to support him.

Miami Gardens man's deportation flight diverted to Equatorial Guinea after Liberia standoff

Aug 20, 2026Miami Gardens, FLCuba

Carlos Rodríguez López, a 35-year-old Cuban man who had been living in Miami Gardens with his wife, was deported after being held in ICE custody since April 2025. He was among six deportees — including three other Cuban men, a Brazilian man and a Cameroonian woman — who refused to leave an Aug. 20, 2026 flight that departed Louisiana, stopped in Dakar, Senegal, and landed in Liberia, the first deportation flight under a new U.S.-Liberia agreement allowing up to 1,200 such transfers over a year. Officers handcuffed and forcibly removed the group before the plane continued to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, where advocates say the roughly 40 detainees held at a hotel there have had meals withheld and faced physical abuse by guards, and one of the Cuban men requires regular care for a colostomy bag with no medical staff on site. His wife, Igrayne Ribot, said she learned of his location only through a brief video call, breaking down when he told her he was in Africa.

Cuban legal resident shoved off deportation plane, hospitalized in Equatorial Guinea

Aug 20, 2026Lehigh Acres, FLCuba

Leonardo Sánchez Fernández, a 49-year-old Cuban lawful permanent U.S. resident from San Miguel del Padrón who had lived in Lehigh Acres, Florida, was deported by ICE to Equatorial Guinea under a third-country agreement despite holding valid residency until 2030. He had been detained by ICE at a gas station after a drug possession arrest and completing community service, then held at the Alligator Alcatraz facility before being flown for more than 36 hours from Alexandria, Louisiana without being told his destination. During a stopover in Liberia, witnesses said guards shoved him and he fell face-first onto the tarmac, aggravating a preexisting abdominal hernia and intestinal damage from an old stabbing injury and prior surgery. He is now hospitalized in Malabo receiving IV fluids without a passport, documents, consular assistance, toothbrush, or clothes, and may miss a scheduled surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital. His mother Caridad and sister Dorty, in Lehigh Acres, learned of his location after seeing a video posted from Equatorial Guinea and have been trying to secure his release.

ICE detains three men in Syracuse stop, one tasered while resisting

Aug 20, 2026Syracuse, NY

Federal immigration agents detained three men in a white Jeep in the Westcott neighborhood of Syracuse, stopping the vehicle in the 400 block of Westcott Street. Witnesses said two of the men complied with ICE agents, but the driver tried to flee and was tasered several times before being tackled by ICE agents. Syracuse police officers, who initially stopped to assist thinking it was a local warrant execution, backed off once they realized it was an ICE operation and later only wrote a crash report at ICE's request. The men, who have not been identified, were taken to ICE's Central New York headquarters in Mattydale; the incident is one of more than 80 similar detentions reported in Onondaga County in the first two-and-a-half months of the year.

Transgender asylum seeker held in men's Louisiana facility, denied hormone therapy

Aug 20, 2026New York, NYVenezuela

Camila Toro de Paula, a 25-year-old transgender woman from Venezuela, has been held for nearly a year at a men's ICE detention facility in Jena, Louisiana, after being arrested during a routine immigration check-in at ICE's New York City office in August 2025. She fled Venezuela after suffering childhood abuse, including repeated rape by relatives and a homophobic stabbing attack by police, and sought asylum in the U.S. two years ago. Toro de Paula says she has been assaulted, threatened, placed in solitary confinement, denied water, and deprived of the hormone therapy she had received for years, after a policy protecting transgender detainees was eliminated in February 2025. She told The New York Times, "I'm afraid of dying here," and says she has resisted pressure to voluntarily return to Venezuela. Immigration officials cited felony assault and weapons charges as justification for her detention, though both charges were later dismissed and sealed.

ICE detains nail salon worker in Newburyport 'with guns drawn'

Aug 19, 2026Newburyport, MAChina

Jun Qiu, a Chinese national who runs Fantasy Nails on Low Street in Newburyport, was detained by ICE agents who entered the salon "with guns drawn," according to Mayor Sean Reardon. Eyewitnesses reported the operation left customers shaken, and the mayor called it "incredibly frightening and traumatic," adding that the city does not condone the manner in which the operation was carried out. DHS said Qiu is in ICE custody pending removal proceedings; he had been arrested days earlier by local police on misdemeanor harassment and threat charges and had pleaded not guilty. The city said it did not participate in or receive advance notice of the ICE operation, and Reardon said officials are continuing to gather information from those involved or who witnessed the incident.

In the video, a bystander can be heard questioning the agents' presence on what he calls "private property," while an officer orders him to back away under threat of arrest. Brownsville Mayor John Cowen criticized the increased aggressiveness of federal immigration operations in the area, saying it "sends the wrong message" and that "it makes no sense to go after people who follow the rules."

Ethiopian man repeatedly re-detained by ICE despite court orders, official held in contempt

Aug 18, 2026Baltimore, MDEthiopia

Ibrahim Mohammed, a 44-year-old Ethiopian national who came to the U.S. in 2014, was granted protection from deportation in 2024 under the Convention Against Torture after an immigration judge found he would likely face torture or persecution if returned to Ethiopia. Despite federal court orders in February and March requiring his release, roughly 10 ICE agents arrested him a third time on July 28, 2025, at his Baltimore-area apartment after falsely telling him and his attorney his ankle monitor was malfunctioning. Agents shoved his head into a car and gave him documents referencing Eswatini, a country ICE had previously tried unsuccessfully to deport him to. A judge again ordered his immediate release the same day, and U.S. District Judge John deGravelles later held then-ICE deputy field office director Vernon Liggins, who ordered the arrest on his last day in that role, in civil contempt, ordering ICE to pay Mohammed's attorney's fees and $180 for lost time. Mohammed, who spent 13 months in and out of ICE custody, testified the repeated detentions caused him nightmares and led his landlord to force him to move out.

72-Year-Old Woman Pepper-Sprayed by ICE Agent While Filming Enforcement Operation in Manhattan

Aug 17, 2026New York, NY

Linda Wolff, a 72-year-old fashion stylist and longtime immigrant rights supporter from Manhattan, was pepper-sprayed in the face by a masked ICE agent while filming federal officers near Inwood Hill Park during what officials referred to as 'Operation Rotten Apple.' Wolff said she had learned of ICE's presence via social media and was recording from a distance, never touching or acting aggressively toward officers, when an agent approached and sprayed her without provocation. She said her eyes and skin burned afterward but continued documenting ICE activity in the neighborhood and said she would not be deterred from doing so again. DHS said agents used pepper spray to control an 'unruly, combative' crowd while recovering a vandalized government van, describing their response as appropriate and within training. Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the incident as part of a pattern of aggressive federal immigration enforcement tactics against New Yorkers, and Wolff's attorney filed a claim against ICE under New York's newly enacted Bivens Act, calling it one of the first tests of the statute and describing the pepper-spraying as 'purely punitive.'
