10-year-old girl detained by ICE on way to school bus, freed after judge blocks deportation

Feb 6, 2026Columbia Heights, MNEcuador

Elizabeth Zuna Caisaguano, a 10-year-old fourth-grader at Columbia Heights Public School District near Minneapolis, was detained by ICE agents on January 6, 2026, along with her mother Rosa Elena Caisaguano Cajilema while being driven to her school bus stop. Agents told Elizabeth they would take her to school but instead transported the pair 1,200 miles to the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas. The family had fled Ecuador and sought asylum in 2020; their application was denied in September 2025, but an appeal remained pending. During their month in detention, Elizabeth developed flu-like symptoms and her mother developed hives, with limited medical care provided, and at least six other children from the same school district were later sent to the same facility as part of a broader operation. After a habeas corpus petition was filed, U.S. District Judge Fred Biery ruled on February 2 that they could not be deported while their case proceeds. Elizabeth and her mother were released on February 3 and returned to Minnesota to reunite with Elizabeth's father, following calls for their release from school officials and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Massachusetts father seeking labor trafficking visa held in ICE detention for two months

Feb 6, 2026Springfield, MAEcuador

Juan David Quichimbo, an Ecuadorian father living in Springfield, Massachusetts, has been held at the Plymouth ICE detention facility for nearly two months despite having a pending T-visa application as an alleged labor trafficking victim. Quichimbo has no criminal record; his family received notice at a routine immigration check-in in November before his detention. His attorney Elizabeth Shaw said he and his family 'have been diligently pursuing their relief from removal' since arriving in the U.S. and that he has never had any interaction with law enforcement, 'not even a minor driving infraction.' After one federal judge lifted a ban on his transfer or deportation, a second federal judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking ICE from moving him, which the government has moved to dissolve.

Green card holder Maher Awad deported on private jet to West Bank, leaving newborn son in Michigan

Feb 5, 2026Phoenix, AZPalestine

ICE chartered a private Gulfstream IV jet owned by Florida property developer Gil Dezer, a Trump associate and donor, to deport Palestinian men from the United States to the West Bank. At least two deportation flights occurred on January 20-21 and February 1-2, 2026, transporting eight or more detainees from an Arizona detention facility through multiple countries (New Jersey, Ireland, Bulgaria) before reaching Tel Aviv and the West Bank. Among those deported was 24-year-old Maher Awad, a long-term green card holder who had lived in the U.S. for nearly a decade and had a newborn son in Michigan. The men were shackled throughout the multi-country journey and reported being abandoned at checkpoints with minimal resources. A joint investigation by +972 Magazine and The Guardian documented the flights, with former U.S. officials and immigration lawyers characterizing them as indicative of a shift in Trump administration deportation policy toward more aggressive mass deportation tactics.

Feb 4, 2026Greenport, NYEl Salvador

According to a federal habeas corpus petition filed on his behalf, he arrived in the United States in 2001 and has never been arrested or convicted of any crime, directly contradicting ICE's claims that he was previously removed in 1998 and reentered illegally. He had worked at Pindar Vineyards for 23 years, where he was known for his strong work ethic, kindness, and positive attitude. His detention left his family without their primary breadwinner. Community members and advocacy groups, including OLA of Eastern Long Island, launched fundraising campaigns and legal support efforts to assist his family.

A second longtime Pindar worker, Martir Zambrano Diaz, was detained in the same raid; as of early March, the vineyard's general manager said he had not learned either worker's whereabouts. Feb 4, 2026Baltimore, MDVietnam

Melissa Tran, a Vietnamese refugee who legally entered the U.S. in 1993 and built a life in Maryland as a mother and former health care worker, was detained by ICE for over five months following a routine immigration check-in in Baltimore tied to a non-violent theft conviction from her teenage years in 2001. A federal judge ordered her release in October 2025, finding continued detention unnecessary, but she still faced a 2003 removal order. Though Vietnam had previously refused to accept her for two decades, the country agreed to take her back, and she was deported in November 2025. During the deportation process, she was shackled at her wrists, waist, and ankles for roughly 80 hours total, including over 10 hours before her flight with no food or water, operated by Omni Air International. She reported her wrists became dented and red from the restraints, that she soiled herself during the journey, and described feeling 'less than an animal,' while recalling poor hygiene conditions during her detention.
