Minneapolis teacher tackled, choked and detained by ICE agents while shielding students

Jul 15, 2026Minneapolis, MN

Quentin Williams, an assistant teacher known to students as 'Mr. Q' at Roosevelt High School, was tackled, choked and detained by federal immigration agents on January 7, 2026, hours after Renee Good was fatally shot nearby. Agents pursuing a suspect in a car chase swarmed the school's front lawn as students were being dismissed; body camera footage shows agents grabbing and choking Williams after he helped up a colleague who had been knocked down while trying to keep agents off school property. He was placed in an unmarked SUV and later charged by federal prosecutors with assaulting and impeding officers, charges that were dropped months later. Williams, a Roosevelt High graduate and veteran educator, said, 'I feel lucky to be alive,' and described being terrified during the encounter. He believes he was targeted because he is Black and has struggled with anxiety since the incident, and is now pursuing a Federal Tort Claims Act lawsuit against the government with the MacArthur Justice Center and Friedman, Gilbert and Gerhardstein. Minneapolis Public Schools closed all schools citywide for several days afterward.

Colombian father Johan Durán Guerrero killed by ICE officer outside Maine facility

Jul 14, 2026Scarborough, ME

ICE agents fatally shot Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a Colombian man, outside the agency's immigration facility in Maine in July 2026. His partner, Karolina Rojas, described him as a loving, hardworking father who did everything to make her and their daughter happy. Relatives say the ICE officer who shot him has a history of serious mental health struggles dating to childhood. In response, community ICE-watch groups across Maine have ramped up efforts to monitor and document agency vehicles and detentions amid an intensified crackdown known as Operation Catch of the Day, work that organizers, largely small nonprofits and volunteers, say has become exhausting as enforcement expands into rural and suburban areas.

Colombian father killed by ICE agent in Maine traffic stop, wasn't intended target

Jul 14, 2026Biddeford, MEColombia

Joan Sebastian Durán Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian national with lawful work authorization, was fatally shot by ICE officer David Brouillette during a traffic stop in Biddeford, Maine, while driving to his job as a food delivery and custodian driver. His partner, Karolina Rojas, and their 3-year-old daughter were nearby when agents rammed his vehicle and opened fire, striking him in the head. Officials later confirmed he was not the intended target; agents had been surveilling a nearby address for someone with a final removal order. A neighbor described him as 'a good person,' quiet and dedicated. His death made him the 11th person fatally shot by federal immigration officials during Trump's second term, coming days after agents killed another immigrant father in Houston. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin briefly paused ICE traffic stops before Trump reversed the decision, and the FBI declined to open a civil rights investigation despite the officer's prior history of abusive conduct. Maine officials, including Senator Angus King, Governor Janet Mills, and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, called for an independent investigation as protests broke out in Biddeford and his family sought to repatriate his body to Colombia.

Teen released after ICE pointed gun during chase of roofers in South Texas

July 14, 2026Laguna Vista, TXUnited States

On July 14, 2026, ICE agents conducted a targeted enforcement operation on residential streets in Laguna Vista, Texas, near South Padre Island, the same day the Trump administration had briefly ordered ICE to pause most traffic stops following agent-involved killings in Houston and Maine. Witnesses said an unmarked SUV chased two vehicles carrying seven roofers returning from a lunch break to their job site; resident Samantha Weber Alarcón said the pursuit, at high speed through narrow 20-mph streets, nearly ran her off the road while she was driving with her son. After one vehicle stopped in a home's driveway, the driver and another passenger fled on foot, leaving an 18-year-old U.S. citizen in the back seat; Alarcón alleged agents entered a neighbor's yard, drew weapons, and pointed a gun at the teen before briefly handcuffing and then releasing him once they confirmed his citizenship. ICE said an agent drew his weapon when the teen reached into a tool bag after failing to follow orders, and that a knife was later found inside; the agency denied a vehicle pursuit occurred but confirmed 'targeted enforcement arrests' in the area, where local police with body-worn cameras were also present. The incident took place amid stepped-up ICE activity in the Rio Grande Valley, about 20 minutes from South Padre Island, where agents fatally shot U.S. citizen Ruben Ray Martinez in March 2025.

U.S. citizen nearly hit by ICE agents during high-speed chase, gun drawn on passenger

Jul 14, 2026Laguna Vista, TX

Samantha Weber Alarcón, a Laguna Vista resident, was driving with her son to a movie theater when ICE agents chasing a crew of roofers nearly collided with her car on Mesquite Drive, forcing her into a ditch. She witnessed an agent point a gun at a young man in the back of a Ford Escape before handcuffing him; a responding Laguna Vista police sergeant said he could not intervene beyond reporting the agents to their supervisors. The man, a U.S. citizen in his mid-twenties, was released after agents realized their mistake; ICE disputed Weber Alarcón's account, denying a pursuit and describing the vehicle as "abandoned," while the man said the alleged weapon was a shingle cutter in his tool bag. The incident has prompted widespread Facebook posts from residents reporting similar ICE stops of construction and lawn-care workers in the area, with Weber Alarcón's account shared thousands of times.

Guatemalan day laborer killed by SUV while fleeing Home Depot ICE raid in California

July 13, 2026Monrovia, CAGuatemala

Carlos Roberto Montoya Valdez, a 52-year-old day laborer from Guatemala, died on August 14, 2025, after being struck by an SUV traveling approximately 60 mph while fleeing across Interstate 210 in Monrovia, California during a federal immigration enforcement operation at a Home Depot parking lot. Montoya had lived in the United States for about three years and worked to support his wife of 35 years, Ana María Vásquez, four daughters, and grandchildren in Guatemala. His daughter Ana Victoria recalled his final call the night before his death, in which he expressed hope of returning to Guatemala once he earned enough money to start his own business. His wife described him as "a light" who brought joy to everyone, especially his grandchildren. Between eight and ten day laborers from Guatemala, Mexico, and Honduras were arrested during the operation. The Department of Homeland Security stated Montoya was not being pursued by federal agents when he ran. Community advocates, including the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, blamed the enforcement operation's tactics for creating panic that led to his death, and organizers are demanding a full investigation into the circumstances and calling on Home Depot to release any video footage.

Cannabis farmworker dies from 30-foot fall while fleeing ICE raid at California greenhouse

Jul 12, 2026Camarillo, CAMexico

Jaime Alanis Garcia, a 57-year-old farmworker at Glass House Farms in Camarillo, California, died from injuries sustained during a federal immigration raid in July 2025. While fleeing federal immigration agents who deployed rubber bullets, tear gas, and stun guns, Garcia fell approximately 30 feet from a greenhouse roof, sustaining a broken neck and skull fractures. He was placed on life support before his family decided to discontinue his care. Garcia's wife and daughter filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Glass House Farms and the federal government, alleging that federal agents' use of excessive force caused Garcia to seek shelter on the roof. The raid resulted in more than 360 arrests of undocumented workers across Camarillo and Carpinteria locations. The Department of Homeland Security stated that Alanis was never in custody and was not being chased by federal agents. Community members later marched through Carpinteria to commemorate Garcia's death and demand accountability.

Man restrained by ICE agents in Salt Lake City home, family questions warrantless entry

Jul 11, 2026Salt Lake City, UT

Raul Moreno Meza, a middle-aged man living in Salt Lake City's Rose Park neighborhood, was restrained by ICE agents inside his home on July 7 after agents followed him from a gas station into his garage without announcing themselves as immigration officers, according to his daughter Elizabeth Garcia. Garcia, a U.S. citizen, filmed the incident in which agents also restrained her teenage brother while their family dog escaped. Garcia said her father has not left the U.S. in 22 years and that their grandfather, a U.S. citizen, petitioned for his legal residency before his death; the family hopes to complete that process. ICE stated Moreno Meza was granted voluntary return to Mexico for illegal entries, but Garcia disputes this account and says she is unaware of multiple entries. An attorney representing Moreno Meza argues that law enforcement cannot enter a home without a warrant except in special circumstances involving exigent danger, and that agents should have waited for him to exit or obtained a warrant.

Jul 9, 2026Taylorsville, UTnull

Arturo Ruvalcaba, a 38-year-old deaf man with a green card, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against ICE agents and federal officials after an encounter on September 29 outside Salt Lake Community College's Taylorsville campus. According to the lawsuit, three white Ford SUVs pulled up to a bus stop where Ruvalcaba was waiting, and agents in military-style uniforms approached him shouting commands without providing a sign language interpreter or accommodating his deafness. When Ruvalcaba attempted to communicate through gestures and sign language and retrieve his documentation, an agent pushed him down by his shoulders and another pulled forcefully on his arm, injuring his elbow. After presenting his legal status documents, he was released. Ruvalcaba subsequently experienced pain and swelling, required multiple medical treatments, and missed several weeks of work. His wife reported that the encounter affected the emotional well-being of their three adopted sons. On July 8, 2026, the parties filed a stipulated motion to dismiss the case without prejudice, and the court terminated the civil case on July 9, 2026.

According to Drury, the agent then positioned himself in front of the vehicle, smiled, waved, and walked away. Drury stated the agent's actions followed a pattern he has witnessed before, where agents spray the air-conditioning vents so that if the driver turns on the air conditioning, the pepper spray comes through the vents.

Jul 6, 2026Baltimore, MDSierra Leone

Rabbiatu Kuyateh, a 58-year-old nurse who spent more than 30 years in the U.S. caring for Covid-19 patients and disabled adults, was detained by ICE agents during a routine check-in in Baltimore on July 1, 2025, with her son Mohamed present. After four months in ICE custody, she was deported to Ghana as part of a third-country deportation, a country with which she had no ties. Video obtained by news outlets shows Ghanaian officials dragging her by her hair, shoeless and screaming, through a hotel in Accra and forcing her onward to Sierra Leone, the country a U.S. judge had ruled would endanger her life. She is now living in hiding in an undisclosed location in Africa.
