The Justice Department has filed new denaturalization actions against 40 naturalized Americans, which Attorney General Todd Blanche called the "largest denaturalization effort in modern history." The individuals, originally from countries including Mexico, Colombia, Pakistan, Haiti, Nepal and Ghana, were accused of concealing information during the naturalization process. This follows reporting that the department was already targeting 384 naturalized Americans as of April, part of a broader surge that saw the administration file papers against 17 people in a single month this year, compared with an average of just 15 denaturalization cases filed annually from 2017 to 2025 and only 64 cases brought under the Biden administration over four years. Between 1990 and 2017, the government filed just 305 total denaturalization cases; the first Trump administration initiated 168, and internal guidance suggests the current administration seeks 100 to 200 cases per month.
