Maria Leiva and Abraham Domingo, a Guatemalan couple who had lived in the U.S. for nearly 20 years, were detained by Border Patrol agents on August 9, 2026, while driving home from church with their five children near Greenacres/Lake Worth, Florida. Domingo worked as a plumber and electrician while Leiva managed the household; agents said the car's license plate had been flagged as belonging to a non-citizen. Their eldest daughter, Wendy, a U.S. citizen who had turned 18 the day before, was driving because her parents could not and is now the primary caregiver for her four younger siblings, ages 3 to 16. A video of the children crying and hugging their parents goodbye circulated widely online. DHS said Leiva had an outstanding removal order and Domingo had a past domestic battery charge that did not result in a conviction; the parents are now held in separate Broward County detention facilities, and an immigration judge has ordered Leiva deported. Wendy said she now plans to work two jobs to support her siblings instead of attending college classes she had been accepted into to study to become an ultrasound technician, saying, 'I never thought both my parents would get taken away at the same time, leaving me in charge of my four siblings.'

“I never thought both my parents would get taken away at the same time, leaving me in charge of my four siblings. Leaving us all alone.”

“Our people are either constructing buildings, fixing things or cutting y'all's grass, yet we have to suffer by getting torn apart and throwing us out of this country, like we are nothing, calling us animals, aliens, illegals. Like if we aren't all humans. It's just very cruel.”
