Delaney Hall detainees report worsening conditions and contaminated water months after protests
Aug 20, 2026·Location: Newark, NJ
Country of origin: Peru

More than 10 people detained at the Delaney Hall ICE facility are seeking U visas, alleging abuse including beatings and tear-gassing by guards during a hunger and labor strike this summer, amid an ongoing New Jersey attorney general investigation into civil rights abuses. GEO Group and DHS have denied mistreatment allegations. Months after the strike ended, volunteers and released detainees say conditions have worsened, with reports of frozen or worm-infested food and discolored, metallic-tasting drinking water that a volunteer's prior testing found contained lead, copper and bacteria; Senator Andy Kim said the water tasted similarly bad during a restricted August visit. One strike leader, Martin Soto, has remained in solitary confinement at a nearby facility since the strike, and his wife has said she suffered a miscarriage in August due to the stress.
