Beginning August 24, 2026, ICE agents conducted a days-long enforcement operation across Danbury and neighboring Connecticut towns including Bridgeport, Stamford, Hamden, Hartford and Redding, detaining at least 100 people according to immigrant advocacy organizations. Agents, some masked and using a facial-recognition app, made arrests at day-laborer gathering spots, apartment buildings, grocery stores, parks, a daycare center and school bus stops on the first day of the school year, separating more than 40 families. Witnesses described agents chaining detainees, tackling people in the street and using pepper spray, while Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves accused ICE of racial profiling and DHS said it had arrested at least four people with violent criminal convictions. The Justice Department separately sued to challenge a new Connecticut law restricting ICE mask-wearing and arrests near schools and churches.
