ICE detention deaths reach highest level since pandemic amid custody surge
Jun 25, 2026

At least 57 people have died in ICE custody since Donald Trump returned to office, as the detention population grew nearly 70% to almost 66,000 people by July 2026. Human Rights Watch found the mortality rate is nearly four times higher than under the Biden administration, identifying seven apparent suicides among 39 deaths examined during Trump's first year back in office. Government Accountability Office reviews have previously identified oversight weaknesses in ICE's medical care documentation and detention-cost tracking, and ICE ended a requirement in June 2026 to report deaths occurring within 30 days of a detainee's release.
