Customs and Border Protection began construction on a 30-foot steel bollard border wall in Hudspeth County, Texas, part of a broader plan to extend wall construction into the Big Bend region, funded by $46.5 billion allocated in a recent spending bill. More than 400 landowners hold Rio Grande frontage property where CBP is seeking construction rights, and more than half have joined a coalition disputing the government's use of eminent domain. On September 14, that coalition, along with the advocacy group Conserve Big Bend and landowners from Presidio and Redford, filed suit in federal court in Washington, D.C., against the Department of Homeland Security, its secretary, and the CBP commissioner, arguing the agency improperly invoked expedited legal powers meant only for areas of 'high illegal entry.' Construction near Santa Elena Canyon inside Big Bend National Park, part of a $1.72 billion contract awarded to a Kiewit subsidiary for 17 miles of vehicle barrier, has been paused by DHS through September 30.
