A weeklong immigration enforcement operation across Southwest Florida, running from Aug. 24 through Aug. 27, resulted in approximately 500 arrests. The operation involved ICE working alongside the Florida Highway Patrol, Lee County Sheriff's Office, Florida National Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Those arrested included an unnamed Honduran man accused of molesting two children, a suspected Mexican cartel member, and nearly a dozen other individuals with prior illegal reentries and criminal histories including domestic violence, DUI, battery, and unenforced removal orders dating back to 2011. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and ICE Miami field office director Matthew Elliston credited the results to a 'whole-of-government' partnership, noting that all 67 Florida county sheriffs partner with ICE. ICE stated the sweep complements ongoing work-site inspections targeting employers who violate immigration laws, and DeSantis suggested the enforcement model could be replicated in other states.
