Burundi has agreed to accept migrants deported from the US who originate from other countries, joining several other African nations in similar deals. Presidential spokesperson Nancy Ninette Mutoni said Burundi will only accept deportees not facing criminal prosecution or terrorism links, and is planning for their housing and integration into local communities, with some potentially eligible to pursue citizenship under Burundian law. Burundian officials said the deal is also meant to strengthen diplomatic ties with Washington. The arrangement follows a US appeals court ruling requiring deportees get a chance to raise persecution or torture concerns before being sent to a third country, which had delayed flights involving Burundi, Rwanda and the Central African Republic, before the US Supreme Court allowed such deportations to resume on September 29 while litigation continues.
