The Southern Poverty Law Center and Americans for Immigrant Justice filed a federal class action in Miami on behalf of detainees held at ICE's Miramar field office, including Orlando Rosales Salmeron and a second plaintiff identified as John Doe, alleging the site functions as a de facto detention center with unconstitutional conditions. The suit says up to 150 people have been held there despite a maximum occupancy of 56, with detainees denied beds, adequate food, water, showers, and hygiene supplies, and coerced into signing legal documents while being cut off from confidential communication with attorneys. Whistleblowers cited in the complaint reported prolonged shackling of detainees, including elderly people with serious health issues and limited mobility, for up to 16 hours a day, and a lack of proper medical care. The allegations follow a July unannounced visit by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and a Sept. 21 whistleblower report that prompted the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to open an investigation.
