Hundreds held for weeks at Florence Staging Facility amid "deplorable" conditions, report finds
Jun 2026·Location: Florence, AZ

The Florence Staging Facility, a unit of the Florence Detention Center meant to hold people under 72 hours, is now holding many for days or weeks awaiting deportation, according to a report by the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project's Liz Casey. Women reported up to 28 held in trailers with 10 bunk beds, some sleeping on the floor; men reported 200-300 people in a unit with about 60 bunk beds, many sleeping on the floor without a mattress or blanket. People described wearing the same street clothes for weeks with no laundry, reusing unwashed bedding, towels, and shower shoes passed on from others, having no commissary access (even people with diabetes needing snacks), no tablets, weeks before getting a phone call, no outdoor recreation, and no sun for weeks, leaving families unsure where their relatives were. One man with diabetes held there and in overflow housing for about three weeks awaiting deportation to Venezuela developed a foot rash, received no treatment, went without his diabetes medication and blood sugar checks, and could not eat after a 4 p.m. dinner. A man from Mexico with family just across the border waited over a month for a flight to Mexico City, sleeping on the floor and never given a blanket, towel, or shower shoes. The report attributes overcrowding partly to large groups transferred from the Mesa Gateway Airport ICE facility and to disorganized deportation logistics, including people being brought to planes that are reported broken or flown to other locations and back, with overcrowding reports dating to late 2025.
