ProPublica finds ICE detained over 500 U.S. citizens despite denials
Oct 6, 2026

A ProPublica investigation found that immigration agents have detained at least 506 U.S. citizens during the Trump administration's mass deportation campaign, despite repeated DHS assurances that citizens are not at risk. The tally includes at least 70 children and teenagers and more than 100 Americans detained after agents questioned their citizenship status, nearly all of whom were people of color. At least 63 citizens were detained while recording their arrests, 36 were denied contact with a lawyer or family member for more than a day, and roughly a dozen citizens, mostly children, were deported. A former ICE official who ran East Coast offices for about eight years, Darius Reeves, said he had "never seen so many U.S. citizen encounters" in his career, calling it "an embarrassment."
