Hawaiʻi's congressional delegation sent a letter to the Department of Justice questioning why Trump-appointed immigration judges are requiring in-person hearings four times as often as before, ending a longstanding virtual hearing policy. Lawmakers warned that neighbor island residents face costly travel, lost wages, and childcare burdens, and that missing a hearing can result in an automatic deportation order. They asked DOJ to restore remote hearing options or hold periodic hearings on other islands.
