Kashanian came to the US on a student visa in 1978 and had lived without legal status for decades, repeatedly denied asylum and green-card status, but was allowed to remain under supervised check-ins due to her 'good moral character.' Her husband of 35 years, Russ Milne, and their daughter organized a letter-writing campaign that drew the attention of Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and state Rep. Stephanie Hilferty, who pressed Trump administration officials to review her case. She was released from the ICE detention center in Basile, Louisiana, and her family is now working with her attorney to pursue asylum or permanent residency.
