Immigrants face growing threat from fake ICE agents during Trump's second term
Oct 2, 2025

A CNN review found two dozen incidents of people posing as ICE officers in 2025, including kidnapping, robbery, and sexual assault, while a separate NBC News investigation counted at least 31 such cases in 2025 alone, compared to an average of 5.3 incidents per year over the previous decade. NBC identified 84 impersonation cases nationwide between 2014 and 2025, with incidents including armed robberies and fake home raids targeting immigrants afraid to contact police. Experts say ICE agents' use of masks and plain clothes during operations may make it easier for impersonators to deceive victims. Only one of the 2025 cases has resulted in federal charges, compared to roughly half of such cases under previous administrations.
