Chicago immigrant tenants face eviction after ICE detains over 3,700 people
May 4, 2026·Location: Chicago, IL
Country of origin: Mexico

A report by Rent Brigade, Palenque LSNA and the Belden Sawyer Tenant Association found that ICE and Border Patrol raids under Operation Midway Blitz, which began September 8, 2025, led to more than 3,700 detentions over two months and caused Chicago immigrant families to lose thousands in wages and fall behind on rent. Survey data from 100 immigrant renters in Logan Square and Avondale showed average rental debt of $1,700, with 62 percent behind on rent and weekly wages dropping from $700 to $509 after the raids. Some tenants have stopped working out of fear of detention, and advocates are calling on the Chicago City Council to pass an eviction moratorium.
