Michigan man deported to Iraq days after reporting detention conditions to Congress
May 7, 2026·Location: Detroit, MI
Country of origin: Iraq

Sanan Atou, 43, who lived in metro Detroit for more than 30 years and is not an Iraqi citizen, does not speak Arabic, and has not been in Iraq since childhood, was deported to Baghdad on Feb. 22, days after telling U.S. Reps. Hillary Scholten and Haley Stevens about conditions at the North Lake Processing Center. His attorney says the timing suggests the removal was retaliation for speaking out, though ICE says the deportation was scheduled before the visit. An Iraqi federal court has ruled Atou is not considered an Iraqi national by lineage or law, and his brother has called the deportation a "death sentence."
