Coachella Valley residents face expanded ICE operations as lawmakers demand answers
May 13, 2026·Location: Palm Springs, CA

The Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice documented more than a dozen ICE and Border Patrol operations beginning around May 10 across Palm Springs, Coachella, Thermal, Desert Hot Springs and Indio, including warrantless raids, traffic stops, and at least 5 arrests. In one widely shared video, a man pleaded in Spanish for permission to retrieve his identification as agents tried to pull him from a van; the coalition said he was later released. Rep. Raul Ruiz sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Mark Mullin calling the operations "indiscriminate" and "racially motivated," citing impacts on students, families and businesses, while the Coachella Valley Unified School District notified parents of enforcement activity near campuses. DHS defended the operations as conducted under federal authority and constitutional standards, as elected officials and advocates continue to denounce the enforcement and warn of community fear.
