Chicago day laborers vanish from hiring corner amid ICE crackdown
Jun 24, 2026·Location: Chicago, IL
Country of origin: Honduras, Guatemala

ICE agents conducted a raid at a Shell gas station hiring site in October 2025, arresting five day laborers, with three confirmed arrested by CBP. Chicago police have increased enforcement at the location, arresting day laborers and warning them to leave. Nearly a year later, the once-bustling corner at Belmont and Milwaukee Avenues now draws only about a dozen or fewer workers at a time, down from the hundreds who used to gather there, as both day laborers and the contractors who hire them have been scared off by immigration enforcement. A network of volunteers has begun offering support to the remaining workers, some of whom, like longtime day laborer Gualberto Olac, have sought work at the site for more than two decades.
