Federal immigration enforcement has intensified across Chicago in recent weeks, with at least 20 people arrested by ICE in the last week of June and 17 more in early July, according to rapid-response groups tracking detentions. The Southwest Side neighborhoods of Back of the Yards, Brighton Park, and Gage Park remain the most heavily targeted, though advocates say the large, visible operations of last fall have given way to brief, less conspicuous stops, including arrests near courthouses. The Illinois Latino Agenda says it has documented roughly three dozen residents detained over a two-week span, and legal groups report most recent detainees have no criminal records. The Resurrection Project reports requests for legal assistance have nearly doubled, rising from about 900 to more than 1,700 inquiries in recent weeks.
