José Gonzalez, a 53-year-old Mexican national who worked as a maitre d' and manager at BiCE Ristorante in Palm Beach for over 20 years while also running the Tacos Agave food truck, was detained by ICE on December 10 after a Florida Highway Patrol traffic stop for tinted windows while driving his nephew's truck. Gonzalez says he held a valid work permit and driver's license tied to a pending asylum case. He was moved between facilities and held at Alligator Alcatraz in the Everglades, where he described cold temperatures, open toilets, and roughly 80 people kept in cramped, cage-like conditions. Staff encouraged detainees to self-deport; his 23-year-old nephew agreed, but Gonzalez refused and remained held. Friends, including restaurant owner Eddie Schmidt, described him as dedicated and generous to the local restaurant community. Community members held vigils and rallies, and nearly 2,000 people signed a petition for his release. Gonzalez was transferred to Krome Detention Center on December 22 and released shortly after, while his nephew remains detained at Krome.
