Border Patrol commander demoted after false accounts led to case dismissals
November 27, 2025·Location: IL

U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino was removed from his role as "commander-at-large" overseeing immigration enforcement in Chicago and Minneapolis as of January 27, 2026, following a series of apparent misrepresentations in enforcement actions that resulted in multiple case dismissals. In a Telemundo interview on October 23, Bovino stated he deployed tear gas in Little Village because he was hit in the head with a rock, but later admitted under oath the rock hit him after the tear-gassing. In video footage, agents on the Broadview facility's roof shot pepper balls at a pastor, hitting him in the head, but Bovino denied witnessing this; when shown footage of himself tackling a man backing away, he denied using force and claimed force was used against him. Bovino also testified that gang members wearing maroon hoodies were present at a protest, but later admitted he could not identify any such gang, and U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis found in early November that Bovino "admitted that he lied about whether a rock hit him before he deployed tear gas."
