Deported despite a court orderCAT/Withholding of Removal

People with CAT or withholding protection deported to third countries

Documented stories describe people granted protection from deportation under CAT or withholding of removal—in Texas, Maryland, California, and Florida—who were instead deported to third countries such as Ghana, Liberia, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic, where some report detention, assault, or lack of medical care despite court orders barring their removal. First documented in June 2025, this pattern became recurring in August 2026, which was also its peak month, and now makes up a larger share of reported cases than earlier periods; most documented individuals remain deported, with a few still detained or released.

First documented Jun 2025, recurring since Aug 2026. A larger share of recent stories than earlier ones.

Share of each month's well-documented stories, Jan 2025 to Oct 2026. Volume is not shown: coverage grew over the record, shares did not have to.
