Lawyers kept from their clients at Alligator Alcatraz
These reports describe detainees at the Everglades facility known as "Alligator Alcatraz" being denied access to lawyers, confidential calls, and visits, with several accounts of detainees held weeks without case numbers or hearings, and some beaten or pepper-sprayed after complaining about lost phone access. Cases span individuals from Mexico, Italy, Cuba, Colombia and elsewhere, as well as mass transfers affecting hundreds of detainees whose families and attorneys could not locate them. First documented in April 2025 and recurring monthly since July 2025, with July 2025 marking the peak month, this pattern now makes up a smaller share of recent reported stories than at that peak.
