Families transferred far from family and lawyers at Winn Correctional Center

Reported cases describe people detained in Alabama, Kansas, Florida, and Arkansas who were then transferred to Winn Correctional Center in Louisiana, far from their families and attorneys. Those held include a Honduran teen detained after a traffic stop, a Kansas father deported on foot into Mexico away from his children, and a diabetic Costa Rican father who died after relatives said he was denied insulin. First documented in January 2026, this pattern became recurring by September 2026, peaked in October 2026, and now makes up a larger share of recent reported cases than earlier ones.

First documented Jan 2026, recurring since Sep 2026. A larger share of recent stories than earlier ones.

Share of each month's well-documented stories, Jan 2025 to Oct 2026. Volume is not shown: coverage grew over the record, shares did not have to.
