Mexican man thrown to ground by ICE while buying wood, son arrested intervening

Sep 25, 2026Phoenix, AZMexico

Luis Silas, a 58-year-old Mexican national, was detained by ICE agents in February 2026 while shopping for wood near 43rd Avenue and Camelback Road in Phoenix to build a bookcase for his wife. Agents appeared to identify him through his car's license plate, addressed him by name, and threw him to the ground during the arrest, injuring his arm. His son, Isaac Luis-Azamar, witnessed the arrest and intervened after believing an agent was about to strike his father; he was himself arrested and accused of assaulting an ICE officer. Silas was held for three days at ICE's Central Avenue processing facility in Phoenix, where he said he was given only a bean burrito every six hours, allowed to shower once, and had to wait to contact his family.

Mexican father detained outside Flagstaff home; wife and children self-deport

Sep 17, 2026Flagstaff, AZMexico

A 34-year-old Mexican national who had lived in Flagstaff with his family for at least two years was detained by ICE agents outside his apartment on East Cortland Boulevard as he was preparing to take his two children to school, according to family spokesperson Maria Castillo Rincon. He was transported to Phoenix shortly after. ICE then called his wife, a 32-year-old Mexican national, and told her that if she did not turn herself in at Phoenix, agents would raid her home; she and her two children, ages 14 and 7, drove to Phoenix and self-deported that same day. The family had sought asylum after fleeing violence in Mexico, but a judge denied their application and issued a deportation notice; Castillo Rincon said ICE had originally intended to detain a different family member, and local police and county officials said they were unaware of the operation, which included agents staging at Fort Tuthill County Park, until learning of it through social media.

Phoenix man detained by ICE agents posing as electricians, family raises funds for bond

Sep 15, 2026Mesa, AZ

Edgar Martinez, 33, was detained by ICE outside his West Phoenix home near 83rd Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road after agents allegedly posing as electricians cut power to his house to lure him outside. His partner, Marisol Lopez, said the agents wore construction-style vests, tampered with the exterior electrical box, never identified themselves or showed a warrant, and pinned Martinez to the ground before detaining him. Lopez said Martinez had no serious criminal record and was applying for a T visa as a victim of human trafficking, while ICE said he lacked lawful status and cited two prior domestic violence misdemeanors. He was being held at a detention facility in Florence, Arizona due to capacity issues elsewhere and was set to appear in immigration court. His sister-in-law, Clara Armenta Aguilar, launched a fundraiser for legal fees and bond, describing him as a devoted husband, brother, and son whose wife has been with him since they were 15-year-old high school sweethearts. The family said they previously experienced the deportation of another relative in June 2019 and are praying for his return.

ICE detains 10 day laborers outside Phoenix Home Depot, activists say

Sep 7, 2026Phoenix, AZ

ICE agents conducted an operation in the parking lot of a Home Depot on 43rd Avenue in west Phoenix, detaining about 10 people early Saturday morning, including day laborers waiting for work and some customers exiting the store. Witnesses said agents disguised themselves as day laborers and unhoused people before making arrests, and cell phone video showed men handcuffed and seated beside the road as agents surrounded them. Erika Andiola of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network and Clarissa Vela of People First Project said many of those detained did not match the administration's stated focus on people with criminal records, with some detainees having only come to shop. Activists noted ICE Mobile Criminal Apprehension Teams have routinely conducted undercover license-plate-scanning operations at the same location. ICE has not publicly released details about the operation, and protesters and day laborers returned to the store two days later.

U.S. citizen held in car by ICE for 50 minutes in Mesa, Arizona

Aug 31, 2026Mesa, AZ

Hugo Ávila Villegas, 40, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Hidalgo, Mexico, says he was held by federal agents in his vehicle on the morning of August 31 near Power and Thomas streets in Mesa, Arizona, despite showing them his U.S. passport. He said agents told him they had a removal order against him and showed him a photo of a suspect born in 1983, though Ávila Villegas was born in 1986 and said the man in the photo did not resemble him. He said agents deflated one of his vehicle's tires before leaving, and about a month later he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, reporting headaches, dizziness and insomnia. A civil rights attorney who reviewed the case said the order agents placed on his windshield may not have been valid and that the officers' conduct could warrant investigation.

Aug 19, 2026Phoenix, AZEcuador

Diana Vera, a 27-year-old Ecuadorian woman, was detained by ICE agents on August 6 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport while traveling with her husband, a U.S. citizen, to celebrate his birthday. According to her mother, Mercedes Espinoza, agents approached Vera by name and detained her, citing an existing deportation order, despite the couple presenting their marriage certificate and evidence of an ongoing process to regularize her status after she entered the U.S. legally on a visa. The Department of Homeland Security told CNN it has intensified screening at airports using data from the Transportation Security Administration to prevent people without legal status from taking domestic flights. The family has launched a fundraising campaign to cover legal costs while seeking her release on bail.

Man detained over a year in Arizona ICE facility says he can no longer walk

Aug 18, 2026Florence, AZ

Guillermo Gallardo Barrera, who lived in Arizona for more than 20 years with no criminal record, entered ICE detention able to walk but after more than a year at the Central Arizona ICE Detention Center can no longer stand without a cane. He reports severe pain, numbness in his hands, debilitating insomnia and an undiagnosed disability, saying ICE has only given him ibuprofen for treatment. He filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus and an emergency motion for a temporary restraining order in federal court, both of which were denied; an amended habeas petition was also denied in June 2026, allowing his detention to continue while broader legal challenges proceed. A new case against DHS Secretary Noem has since been filed on his behalf. "I'm terrified I won't make it out of here alive," he said. Advocates have launched a fundraiser to secure him an independent medical evaluation and legal support.

Pregnant Venezuelan woman detained by Border Patrol in Tucson traffic stop

Aug 18, 2026Tucson, AZVenezuela

Ambar Aguilar Gómez, a 27-year-old Venezuelan woman who is six months pregnant, was detained by Border Patrol on August 11 while riding as a passenger in her cousin's car near the Tohono O'odham reservation south of Tucson, Arizona, after agents found the vehicle lacked insurance. She remains in Border Patrol custody in Tucson, and it is unclear whether she will be transferred to an ICE detention facility. Her husband, Mevin Josué Guerra, said the couple, parents of two children with a third on the way, entered the U.S. from Venezuela in 2019 through an official port of entry and applied for asylum. Guerra, who is recovering from a June car accident that left him in a 10-day coma with a tracheotomy and brain injuries, has been publicly pleading for help holding a sign, and told N+ Univisión, "She is my lifeline. We have no other family here." An immigration lawyer said her pregnancy and her husband's medical condition could be considered as evidence in the case, though the decision rests with a judge.

Aug 16, 2026Gilbert, AZ

Guillermo "Memo" Gallardo Barrera, a longtime Arizona resident, construction worker and welder who helped raise his two U.S.-born children, has spent over a year in ICE custody at the Florence Correctional Center following a routine traffic stop in Gilbert. Advocates from the National Day Laborer Organizing Network and Proyecto Progreso say Gallardo has no criminal record and is being denied proper medical care. Arizona Border Tree Protesters Detained as Century-Old Cottonwood Is Toppled

Aug 4, 2026Lochiel, AZ

Protesters who had staged a more than two-month tree-sit in Lochiel, Arizona, to save a roughly 100-year-old Fremont cottonwood from border wall construction were removed by law enforcement on Oct. 6, after which contractors brought in equipment and knocked down the tree. According to Sierra Club borderlands coordinator Erick Meza, who has served as a spokesman for the protest group, more than 50 Border Patrol agents entered the encampment on private property before dawn, and a crane was used to pull a demonstrator from a platform about 60 feet up in the tree's branches. Meza said roughly a dozen people were arrested, some of whom were later released; Customs and Border Protection confirmed the tree's removal. Santa Cruz County Sheriff David Hathaway said his office was not involved in and was not notified of the raid beforehand.

Ana Granados Sanchez deported with medical tube attached, against hospital orders

Aug 3, 2026Florence, AZEl Salvador

Ana Granados Sanchez, a 49-year-old Salvadoran national held in ICE's Eloy Detention Center, was deported while still having a nephrostomy tube (urine-collection tube) attached to her body, three months after it was surgically placed. Her urologist at Banner Desert Medical Center had advised against deportation until the tube could be removed, and Granados Sanchez requested to see her specialist in person to have it taken out before leaving the country, citing concerns about medical care availability where she was being deported. While in ICE custody, she did not receive recommended follow-up care. During her detention, she was held in a processing facility with about two dozen other people and forced to use a shared toilet with no privacy, and was not given water at the initial processing center—conditions her urologist said may have contributed to her kidney problems. Advocates' efforts to appeal to ICE to delay her deportation were unsuccessful. The Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project opposed the deportation, citing medical neglect and danger to her health.

July 30, 2026Phoenix, AZEcuador

Mabel, an Oakland resident from Ecuador, was detained by ICE agents at Phoenix airport while waiting for a connecting flight. She had a pending asylum claim and held a valid work permit issued by U.S. immigration authorities. According to her husband Abraham Sanchez, an ICE officer approached the couple with a photo of Mabel on his phone, asked her to confirm her name, and took her away. She spent her first night detained near the airport before being transported to Eloy Detention Center. Her case is part of a broader ICE airport crackdown targeting individuals with expired visas and pending immigration applications.

Tucson mother of three detained by ICE agents near courthouse after hearing

Jul 29, 2026Tucson, AZMexico

Alma Guadalupe Nunez-Quijada, a 45-year-old Mexican national who has lived in the U.S. since age 4, was arrested by multiple masked ICE agents on North Stone Avenue around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday as she left a hearing at Pima County Consolidated Justice Court for a noise-ordinance violation. The mother of three U.S. citizens was called by name, surrounded and handcuffed; her eldest daughter said she was calm and compliant. The arrest has raised questions about whether it violated a Pima County Board of Supervisors resolution limiting immigration enforcement on county property, and about how agents knew she would be there. An ICE spokesperson cited a 2006 domestic violence conviction, while Pima County records show only minor traffic charges in 2004 and a 2017 failure-to-pay-fine charge.
