Chinese national dies in ICE custody in Northern Mariana Islands, suicide suspected

Sep 30, 2026Saipan, MPChina

Lianyong Wei, a 51-year-old Chinese national who had lived in Saipan since entering the U.S. in 2019 on a two-week parole authorization, died in ICE custody at the Northern Mariana Islands Department of Corrections. Local police had arrested Wei on August 21, 2026, on criminal charges including an alleged attack on a family and assault with a dangerous weapon, and he was transferred to ICE custody the next day to face removal proceedings. He was found dead with a bedsheet tied to his bunk and around his neck, with reports differing on whether he was discovered unresponsive during a routine morning check less than a day after entering custody or two days later; resuscitation efforts at a hospital failed. It remains unclear whether he received a required medical intake screening. Corrections Commissioner Anthony Torres extended condolences to Wei's family and said the department is reviewing its procedures. His cause of death remains under investigation, and the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles has demanded a thorough inquiry, noting he is at least the fifth Chinese national to die in ICE or Border Patrol custody since March 2025. His death has been recorded among dozens of detainee deaths reported by ICE since 2025.

Salvadoran construction worker held on ICE detainer after DUI crash kills mother and daughter

Sep 5, 2026Montgomery County, MDEl Salvador

Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco, a 32-year-old Salvadoran national living in the U.S. without legal status, was charged with manslaughter and vehicular homicide after allegedly driving drunk the wrong way on the I-270 Spur in Bethesda/Montgomery County, Maryland, causing a head-on collision. The crash killed 46-year-old Musammat Shamima Begum and her 23-year-old daughter Areebah Jahin, and left an 8-year-old girl in their vehicle with life-threatening injuries. Caballero-Nolasco was treated at a hospital before being transferred to the Montgomery County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. ICE lodged an immigration detainer asking local officials not to release him, though Montgomery County's sanctuary policies and Maryland's Community Trust Act make it unclear whether the detainer will be honored. His attorney said he is a construction worker who has lived in the U.S. for 10 years and is expecting a child with his girlfriend.

NJ man with schizophrenia dies of overdose months after deportation to Guyana

Aug 30, 2026NJGuyana

Kwesi Menezes, a 35-year-old lawful permanent resident who had lived in the U.S. since age two and grew up in Burlington County, New Jersey, was found unresponsive in Guyana on August 30, months after being deported there in April. His family believes he overdosed on medication prescribed for schizophrenia, a condition he had struggled with for years. Menezes had been arrested by ICE in Mount Holly, New Jersey, in connection with a prior conviction for assaulting a police officer during what his family described as a mental-health episode, and was later transferred into ICE detention and placed on DHS's 'Worst of the Worst Criminal Aliens Arrested' list in December. His mother and sister said his psychiatric condition was not adequately considered during his immigration proceedings and questioned whether he understood what was happening to him while in custody. Relatives describe him as a gifted singer and dancer who was always willing to help others, and are working to bring his remains back to the U.S. for burial.

Person detained by ICE outside Yakima Police Station after jail release

Aug 28, 2026Yakima, WA

A video circulated by Yakima Community Aid showed a person detained by immigration enforcement agents immediately after being released from Yakima police custody on a Monday. The video, originally posted by a community member, has drawn more than 80,000 views on Instagram and sparked concerns that police and ICE were collaborating. Yakima Police Chief Shawn Boyle said the person had been held on a DUI charge and that a corrections officer handed over his bag of belongings to an ICE agent only because agents took him into custody before the officer could return the property through normal procedure; the department has since changed that procedure to return belongings before opening the gate. Boyle said officers did not coordinate with ICE, explaining that ICE and other agencies monitor publicly available jail and court release schedules, and the incident prompted discussion at a town hall about the Keep Washington Working Act, which restricts local law enforcement from assisting federal immigration enforcement.

Honduran mother reunited with breastfeeding baby after judge orders ICE release

Aug 25, 2026Austin, TXHonduras

Patricia, a 19-year-old Honduran woman living in Austin, was separated from her 8-month-old breastfeeding son after she called 911 to report abuse by her boyfriend but was instead arrested on an assault charge. Prosecutors later dismissed the charge, but ICE took her into custody and held her nearly six weeks at the South Texas Detention Complex, where she suffered painful, swollen breasts and pleaded for a breast pump while her son stayed with a family friend. Patricia said she fled Honduras two years earlier after being raped by a gang member who continued to harass her, and that she had sought asylum in the U.S. Attorneys with the nonprofit American Gateways sued for her release, and U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia in San Antonio ruled that the government had violated the Constitution by detaining her without a hearing, ordering ICE to release her within two days. She was reunited with her son, but still faces a deportation order that her lawyers are appealing.

Both men are Uzbek citizens; Zakhidov had a New York commercial learner permit and a prior DWI conviction along with pending assault and harassment charges, while Payzullaev held a non-domiciled Pennsylvania commercial driver's license and had been ordered detained by an immigration judge in Philadelphia. ICE also reported that Cranbury Police had previously arrested Zakhidov as a fugitive from justice in April 2026. Both men remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

The same day, ICE Washington lodged an immigration detainer and warrant of removal with the detention center, which honors ICE detainers under a 287(g) agreement. Salvadoran man detained by ICE after fatal NY Harbor boat capsize

Aug 20, 2026New York, NYEl Salvador

Manuel Ernesto Hernandez-Umana, 46, an El Salvador national, was detained by ICE after a Coast Guard investigation confirmed his unlawful presence in the United States. He had been arrested on August 9 following the capsizing of a boat near the Statue of Liberty that killed 27-year-old Sara Sanchez and her 5-month-old daughter, Antonella Garcia, both of Queens. Federal prosecutors said the 21-foot vessel was illegally chartered and overcrowded with 14 people aboard, more than double its 10-person capacity, and capsized around 10:20 p.m. on August 8 as Hernandez made a U-turn in choppy waters possibly caused by a larger vessel's wake. He told authorities he entered the U.S. through Texas in 2007 after falsely claiming to be a citizen, and he remains in ICE custody awaiting trial, after which he will face removal proceedings.

Father raised in New Mexico since childhood faces deportation after reentry charge

Aug 19, 2026Española, NMMexico

Edgar Hernandez-Lopez, a father and grandfather in his 40s, was raised in Española, New Mexico since the age of 5 and repeatedly crossed the border again after being deported due to his longstanding roots in the community. His public defender argued in a federal sentencing memorandum that his prior criminal history, largely involving domestic disputes, stemmed from childhood trauma, instability, and deep family ties. He has already spent 129 days in custody and, after pleading guilty to reentry of a removed alien, faces removal to Mexico, where he hopes to reunite with his youngest daughters. ICE located Hernandez-Lopez, like other previously deported individuals, through New Mexico county jail records despite local policies restricting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

Man arrested by ICE same week he began probation, faces reentry charge

Aug 19, 2026NM

Juan Rodriguez Najera was arrested by ICE agents the same week he was placed on probation after pleading guilty to state charges. His probation officer, apparently unaware of his federal arrest, later issued a warrant claiming he had absconded and that his whereabouts were unknown. Rodriguez Najera has since pleaded guilty in federal court to reentry of a removed alien and faces up to 20 years in prison. His case is one of several in New Mexico in which ICE located previously deported individuals through county jail records despite local policies limiting cooperation with immigration enforcement.

Cuban woman held without bond in Miami-Dade jail, faces possible deportation

Aug 17, 2026Miami, FLCuba

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer against Meliza Campos-Sanchez, 26, a Cuban national, after she was arrested and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami. Authorities allege she was involved in an incident at her Miami home on Aug. 16 that led to two counts of child neglect, along with child abuse and arson charges, and she was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation under Florida's Baker Act before being booked; jail records recommend she be held without bond. DHS said ICE asked local officials to notify federal authorities before her release so she could potentially be taken into ICE custody, and the agency said it intends to seek her removal after her criminal case is resolved. She entered the United States through Florida without legal authorization in May 2022, according to DHS, and prosecutors have cited social media videos as evidence in the pending case.

Man deported to El Salvador after months in Virginia jail; data shows hundreds more

Aug 16, 2026Stafford, VAEl Salvador

Oscar, a mechanic from the Fredericksburg area, was held under ICE custody at the Rappahannock Regional Jail before being moved through a chain of detention facilities in Virginia, Texas, and Louisiana and deported to El Salvador in 2024, despite having no felony record. He described poor conditions at the jail, being shackled throughout his deportation flight, and being accused of gang membership in El Salvador due to a paperwork error. Deportation Data Project records show 356 people were held under ICE custody at the jail and removed from the country between January 2025 and March 2026, with 67% having no criminal record beyond their immigration status. The jail's policy of querying ICE about foreign-born detainees exceeds what Virginia law requires, and a new state law, the Community Safety and Trust Act, may prohibit such cooperation without a judicial warrant.

Asylum seeker paroled into U.S. in 2019 wins release after possible stroke in ICE custody

Aug 11, 2026Burbank, CA

The petitioner was paroled into the United States on June 26, 2019, and issued a Notice to Appear; he later filed for asylum and withholding of removal, and an immigration judge dismissed his Notice to Appear. On August 11, 2026, ICE apprehended him in Burbank, California, following his arrest for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and he was served a new Notice to Appear the same day. He has since been detained at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. His family lost contact with him on August 19, 2026, and his attorney later learned he had suffered a possible stroke, was hospitalized for one night, and then returned to detention, where he says he needs prompt surgical evaluation; he also alleges the facility has withheld timely health information from his counsel. He filed a habeas petition and sought a temporary restraining order seeking immediate release, telephone access to counsel and family, a medical evaluation, or a bond hearing. The court found he was denied constitutionally required pre-detention process and granted the TRO, ordering his immediate release under his prior conditions of supervision and referring the underlying habeas petition to a magistrate judge.

Aug 1, 2026Concord, NHIsrael

Avishay Alon, a transgender former intelligence specialist with Israel's Unit 81 who later worked as a computer engineer at Amazon and Microsoft, was transferred from New Hampshire state custody into ICE custody on Aug. 20, a day after signing a parole certificate, and is now held at an ICE facility in Folkston, Georgia. Alon, who uses the name Allison, had been serving a two-to-six-year sentence imposed July 7, 2025, following a 2024 kidnapping conviction. A federal judge had previously noted that immigration detainers are capped at 48 hours and ordered the state to show cause. Alon separately filed a federal lawsuit in December 2025 against the New Hampshire Department of Corrections over housing in a men's facility and access to gender-transition care, with some claims still pending.

Two brothers working as kitchen staff at El Nopalito restaurant in Haddonfield were taken into ICE custody in late July. A GoFundMe organized by Inkwood Books owner Julie Beddingfield, at the request of the brothers' families, has raised $26,742 from 478 donors, surpassing its $15,000 goal, though donations are now paused. The funds support the brothers with expenses in custody, including phone calls, legal communications, and hygiene items, as well as their families' housing, food, and utility costs while they are out of work. The brothers have legal advisors and additional legal and travel expenses are expected as they continue through the immigration process.

Jul 21, 2026Billerica, MAGuatemala

ICE arrested Rocael Ordonez-Cruz, 23, a Guatemalan national, on July 21 at the Middlesex County House of Correction in Billerica following his release from state custody. Four days after the arrest, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey signed a law restricting how ICE can operate within the state.

South Sudanese woman held in Iowa jail by ICE ordered released by judge

Jul 16, 2026Pottawattamie County, IASouth Sudan

A federal judge ordered the immediate release of Nyamuoch Thomas Duoth, a lawful permanent resident born in a refugee camp in Ethiopia who arrived in the U.S. as a refugee in 1994, from a Pottawattamie County, Iowa jail where she was held by ICE. Duoth, a citizen of South Sudan, was first ordered removed in 2020 and released from custody in 2022 after authorities found no significant likelihood of deportation, but ICE detained her again in March 2025, and she remained jailed for more than six months after her removal order became final without progress toward removal. After months in custody, Duoth filed a federal lawsuit against ICE, the Department of Homeland Security and Pottawattamie County seeking her release. U.S. District Judge Stephen Locher said the government's argument for continued detention was 'hard to take seriously,' noting she had lived in the community without incident for years, and her attorneys are now seeking reimbursement of legal fees from the federal government.
