Mexican Deportees Rerouted Through Central America as Mexico Protests to US
Aug 21, 2026
Country of origin: Mexico
Mexico's National Migration Institute reports that nearly 2,900 Mexican deportees have been routed through Guatemala and Honduras this year, plus 20 more through Costa Rica, before being returned to Mexico. Honduras' own migration institute has confirmed 374 such transfers as of August 22, more than double the figure previously documented by human rights groups. President Claudia Sheinbaum has filed a formal protest with Washington, calling the practice unnecessary and saying her government has raised objections through diplomatic channels, though the transfers have continued. Rights organizations including Human Rights First warn the arrangement could expose asylum seekers to legal risks despite Mexican officials saying all affected individuals have since returned to Mexico.
