After the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status for roughly 330,000 Haitians, with the status officially terminating July 27, ICE has intensified deportations, flying people back to Haiti weekly instead of monthly. In Springfield, Ohio, home to about 15,000 Haitians, five residents have been deported, part of more than 470 people removed to Haiti between Aug. 20 and Sept. 17, some with pending asylum claims. Deportation flights now land in Cap-Haïtien rather than Port-au-Prince due to violence, where arrivals receive a meal and about $77 before being left to find their own shelter and support, according to Human Rights Watch. Conservatives have criticized the pace of deportations as too slow, while Springfield pastor Carl Ruby and Sen. Chris Van Hollen pointed to a State Department "Do Not Travel" advisory and thousands of deaths and injuries in Haiti this year.
