Congressman probes reported ICE surge in Indianapolis amid local pushback
Sep 3, 2026·Location: Indianapolis, IN

U.S. Rep. André Carson launched a congressional inquiry into reports of increased ICE enforcement activity in Indianapolis, including masked agents, unmarked vehicles, and a foot pursuit across traffic lanes near Post Road and Interstate 70, demanding DHS and ICE explain the scope and legal authority for the operations. His September 2 letter also requests data on how many people were arrested, their criminal histories, whether warrants or removal orders existed, and where detainees are being held. ICE has not confirmed or detailed any surge, while Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett's office, the City-County Council, IMPD, and the Marion County Sheriff's Office all said they have received no communication from federal authorities and are not involved. Indiana's Senate Enrolled Act 76 (the FAIRNESS Act) requires local governments, schools, and police to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, and state officials including Sen. Jim Banks and Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith publicly voiced support for ICE's actions, while Exodus Refugee Immigration reported a rapid increase in ICE activity affecting Latino and Haitian residents, particularly through traffic stops, and is raising funds to provide alternative transportation for immigrants afraid to drive.
