Haiti Deportation Flights Increase to Weekly as Rights Group Warns of Danger

Country of origin: Haiti

U.S. authorities have deported more than 450 Haitians since ending Temporary Protected Status in late July 2026, according to Haiti's National Office for Migration, with flights to Cap-Haïtien now arriving about once a week instead of once a month. Human Rights Watch, which visited Cap-Haïtien in August and interviewed 44 deportees, found that many had lived in the U.S. for years and been separated from U.S. citizen family members, while others said they had pending asylum claims. Haitian officials told the group they lack the funding, staff, and policy frameworks to safely receive and assist returnees amid a nationwide surge in violence and hunger that has tripled Cap-Haïtien's population. Human Rights Watch is calling on the U.S. Senate to pass House-approved legislation reinstating TPS for Haitians.
