A DHS Office of Inspector General inspection of the now-closed Alligator Alcatraz facility in the Florida Everglades found violations involving environmental health and safety, medical care, food service, personal hygiene and recreation, though the facility complied with intake and use-of-force standards. Housing units provided about 28 square feet per detainee, less than half the 75 square feet required, with units designed for up to 32 people lacking common areas, seating, tables or storage. Between July 2025 and January 2026, 79 detainees were placed in small metal enclosures measuring about 18 square feet, for periods ranging from several minutes to nearly two hours, which OIG described as "highly unconventional." Investigators also found facility staff could not clearly identify which detention standards—Florida jail standards or ICE standards—they were required to follow, and no written policy specified this. DHS has disputed the findings, saying all detainee facilities are clean and allegations of inhumane conditions are false.
