Nicaraguan woman seeks release after suspected miscarriage in ICE custody
Feb 25, 2026·Location: Newport, KY
Country of origin: Nicaragua

Anabell, a 35-year-old asylum seeker from Nicaragua with three children, was detained by ICE during a mandated check-in and taken to Campbell County Detention Center in Kentucky, where she learned she was pregnant during intake but says she received no prenatal vitamins, blood test or ultrasound. In late March she was hospitalized after heavy bleeding and pain, but says she was told at the hospital she was not pregnant and that her hormone levels challenged that she had been, leaving her unclear on what happened to the pregnancy. Neither her attorney nor Democratic Reps. Gwen Moore and Delia Ramirez, who visited the detention center and are now pushing for her release, have been able to obtain her medical records. DHS has reported nearly 500 pregnant, nursing or postpartum people were detained between January 2025 and mid-February 2026, including 16 miscarriages, a count that would not include Anabell's case.
